As technology underpins everything we do, IT apprenticeships are found across all sectors and not just in those for which IT and digital is their core business function. From innovative small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to leading multinational companies, IT apprenticeships are offered by a range of UK organisations.
For example, IT apprenticeships are commonplace at leading tech employers such as Accenture, Capgemini, Cisco, FDM, Fujitsu, Google, IBM, Microsoft, Samsung. You can also find technology-focused apprenticeships in the following industries:
- Banking and finance – Barclays, Deloitte, EY, J.P. Morgan, KPMG and PwC.
- The Civil Service – Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).
- Construction – Mace.
- Engineering and manufacturing – BAE Systems, GE Aviation, Jaguar Land Rover, MBDA and Rolls-Royce.
- Healthcare – the National Health Service (NHS).
- Insurance – Aviva.
- Media – the BBC, Sky and Virgin Media.
- Retail – Amazon and Nestlé.

At City Gateway, we offer an IT based Route to Employment course which is designed to help young people secure IT apprenticeships.
Our IT course supplements our employability and English and maths qualifications (if you need them) and provides one day per week dedicated to giving you an introduction to IT and an understanding of basic computer systems, networking principles, how to identify compatibility issues and how to identify/prevent basic security risks. This will give you the skills, knowledge and experience you need to progress on to an ICT apprenticeship in IT Support.
Once you have completed your introduction to IT you will be able to identify and explain basic computer systems, networking principles, identify compatibility issues and identify/prevent basic security risks. This will give you the skills, knowledge and experience you need to progress on to an ICT apprenticeship in IT Support.
Meet our IT Apprenticeship Assessor, Sayed Ahmed who works closely with our learners to ensure they understand, progress, and secure opportunities in IT.
At City Gateway, we help young people realise their potential by building their confidence and getting them ready for IT apprenticeships. We work with them to ensure it is not just a stepping stone towards their future employment but a springboard towards their career in IT. What distinguishes us from other providers is that prior to their journey into the apprenticeship programme, we work with the individual leaner with inclusion at the heart, regardless of their background or personal circumstances, and channel all our effort to prepare them for the IT apprenticeship.
Following on from the successes we have seen at City Gateway in achieving distinctions for our level 3 Business Administration apprenticeship standards, we have developed our ICT Level 3 qualification, which is an entry point to careers in IT. Not only are we removing barriers for young people who have previously been held back from aspiring to work in IT, we also have a programme to suit individual needs and circumstances for both the employer and the learner themselves.
I see my role as an enabler, bringing several years of experience of having a positive impact on young people’s lives and their careers. Coming from an IT support background I have a good insight into the employers’ as well as apprentices’ needs and expectations. Launching and leading on the delivery of the ICT level 3 qualification at City Gateway and its future success will be one of the highlights of my mission to help young people to achieve their dreams.
No matter what employer or industry you choose, an IT apprenticeship can go a long way in securing a career in IT and digital services. Are you or anyone you know is looking for a career in IT? Please click here to apply today.
