A traineeship is an education and training programme aimed at young people aged 16 to 24, who don’t yet have the appropriate skills or experience to go straight into a job or apprenticeship.

A traineeship will include:

  • A high-quality work experience placement with an employer
  • Training to prepare you for work, including CV writing and what to expect in the workplace
  • Support to improve your English, maths, and digital skills if you need it

Traineeships last between six weeks to a year, though most traineeships last for less than six months. At City Gateway, our traineeships last between 12 weeks and six months.

/   will I get paid for the work placement?

Employers are not required to pay you for the work placement, but they can support you with expenses such as transport and meals.

Some trainees may qualify for financial support, including Bursary Funding.

If you receive benefits, then you can maintain your entitlement whilst on the traineeship.

/   why choose a traineeship?

A traineeship supports you to get into a job or an apprenticeship, essentially helping you get your foot in the door. Traineeships can be a more successful route into employment rather than a direct application to a job or an apprenticeship, as trainees have the opportunity to sample what the working environment is like, and employers get to see just what you’re capable of, which can lead to apprenticeship opportunities with those employers.

It’s a great option for young people who have been unsuccessful when applying for an apprenticeship or work due to a lack of skills and experience.
