City Gateway’s training and apprenticeship programme prepares young people aged 16–24 for employment, further training or apprenticeships through training, coaching and work experience.

We have a range of Route to Work courses which will give you the skills employers are looking for in the people they hire, along with either a vocational qualification in Business Administration and Work Readiness, maths and/or English functional skills level 2, or purely work readiness skills. All our courses aim to help you achieve a sustained job or further education outcome that is appropriate to your skills and ambitions, as well as providing you with a recognised qualification.

One potential outcome is our office based apprenticeships, with some of the top employers in the City, in areas such as administration, customer service specialist, team leader/supervisor and departmental manager.

If you’re unsure what you want to do or where to start we can help with a bit of inspiration from someone who has been in the same position as you. Our apprentice Shayon secured a placement with NSPCC, watch this video to learn more:

/   is City Gateway right for me?

Our mission is to work with young people who have been impacted by social and economic inequality. And we know that as a result of this inequality, circumstances in your life may have held you back previously. You may have been in care or faced challenges of unstable housing or homelessness. You may be a young carer, be in debt, have had criminal justice involvement or had to deal with substance abuse or bringing up a child as a lone parent. Or you may have faced other challenges that have prevented you from reaching your full potential. Whatever your previous experiences may have been, we are here to work with you to achieve your goals.

We are not a college. We are a charity and we rely on funding in order to be able to deliver the programmes we do. And we receive funding specifically to support young people who have faced these challenges in life.

Our course is for you if you;

  • are aged 16-24
  • live in a London borough
  • are not in full time education and don’t have a degree or foundation year of university
  • are currently earning a low wage
  • have faced any of the challenges mentioned above

As you go through our enrolment process we will be asking you to share paperwork relating to the above.

We believe you can achieve your ambitions and overcome whatever barriers you face. And we’re here to make that possible. We can support you to get the skills and qualifications you need to secure a job, apprenticeship or further training.

our commitment to you

Our commitment to you is that we will support you to achieve your successful outcome in education, employment or further training. What does that mean in reality? We know that every person is an individual with different talents, hopes and ambitions. We will support you as you find the right outcome for you.

  • That might be helping you secure a job which plays to your strengths and skills
  • Or it could be helping you to progress on to additional training – maybe your dream is to go to university, or perhaps there’s a specific college course you’d like to do but need your maths and English first
  • Your ambition may be to secure an apprenticeship. We can help you find the one that’s right for you. It could be with an external provider or it could be with one of our office based apprenticeship partners

Whichever outcome is right for you, we will work with you to identify how you can achieve it.

You will put your newly acquired work readiness skills into practice as we support you to find and apply for jobs, further training or apprenticeships. You will get the opportunity to interact with employers, complete work experience if you need it with companies such as IBM, and find out more about the world of work and how to get into that world yourself.

One of the potential outcomes for when you finish your course is to apply for one of our Office Based Apprenticeships. We work with a variety of employers including NSPCC, Man Group, Thoughtworks and Savills who provide apprenticeships across areas such as administration, customer service specialist, team leader/supervisor and departmental manager. Apprenticeships combine working and earning a wage with studying at the same time. They tend to range between 12-18 months in duration.

When you have progressed into our Gateway to Work we will share with you all opportunities available to you with our partner employers as well as any other opportunities available further afield.

success story

‘Before City Gateway there was a lot I didn’t have in terms of skills… I guess you could say I had low self-esteem… Joining City Gateway doing courses and training with them I grew in confidence and I was able to find out about skills I didn’t have necessarily.’
Adetayo, City Gateway apprentice
