Secretary of State for Children, Families and Schools Ed Balls MP was joined by Minister of State for Schools and Learners Vernon Coaker MP on a visit to City Gateway's Limehouse Youth Centre. The visit gave them a chance to see hands on how crime and anti social behaviour was being dealt with and also how the Youth Capital Fund was being used to improve facilities in the area.
Money from the latter fund is distributed by a panel of young people to proposals which must be put together by their peers. Young people from City Gateway's youth work have previously succesfully applied for money to develop a community gym, music studio and 'panna cage' football facility, money received has also allowed the develpoment of new dance & creative workshops as well as the launch of a Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme at the club.
The event showcased a range of success stories from across Tower Hamlets and the central work that the borough council has carried out to support the most at risk young people. As reported in the East London Advertiser: Mr Balls said there was now "more support" available and involvement from local people around the country in early intervention programmes to prevent crime. And Tower Hamlets' acting corporate director of Children, Schools and Families, Isobel Cattermole, said visits from police and case workers as early as at primary school had proved successful.
