Last night teams from 8 Wharf or City firms took each other on in East London charity City Gateway‟s new community shield "Futsal‟ competition – the final saw bankers from Credit Suisse taking on the regulators from the Financial Services Authority with the bank eventually getting a 2-0 victory.
The event marked the launch of a new youth-led social enterprise called "Gateway Motion‟ which will be running future corporate tournaments and team building days for interested firms. Credit Suisse will be the holders of the shield until the next tournament in March 2010 when they will have to defend their title.
"Futsal‟ is a variant of football popular in South America, it makes us of a heavier ball, small pitch and 4 or 5-a-side teams to force players into a more controlled and skilful version of the beautiful game – its popularity and success is reflected in the & skills of international players who have grown up in countries where it is popular.
City Gateway works to upskill disadvantaged individuals in Tower Hamlets who haven't been equipped to benefit from the area's economic regeneration – they partner with a wide range of large firms to give the women & young people they support unique training and experience.
Canary Wharf based bank State Street and Fleet Street law firm Denton Wilde Sapte narrowly missed out on a place in the final whilst teams from Northern Trust, Berrymans Lace Mawer and Teach First were knocked out in the initial group stage of the competition.
The one-off tournament took its inspiration from an ongoing Futsal league City Gateway runs with NEET (not in education, employment or training) young people at its Limehouse Youth Centre – proceeds from the tournament will be used to improve the facilities there and many of the players have signed up to volunteer in supporting the tournament too.
