Local MP Jim Fitzpatrick will this week visit City Gateway’s Limehouse Youth Centre in Tower Hamlets. 18 volunteers from Barclays Commercial Bank will be taking over the centre for the day in a decoration project which sees them brightening up the reception areas, opening up a new studio space and clearing up an outside area.

Cafe has a new Community Flavour
On the 29th April City Gateway Women’s project is opening a unique new cafe project in Poplar, East London. Part of the Well London initiative, it targets the local community and offers a range of healthy options at subsidised, affordable prices.

City Gateway is a charity which links big businesses into community projects and itself runs a Women's Project, Youth Centre, Youth Training & Apprenticeships and a Social Enterprise Hub. A new initiative at their Women's Project is giving women with little or no English skills the chance to role play basic situations and learn simple phrases - later in the month volunteers from State Street Bank will help them launch a new community cafe at the site where individuals will get further opportunities to have practice conversations.

London, 24th March 2009 – This week sees the launch of a new video in which Hollywood star Sir Ian McKellen showed support for local business by lending his voice to be used on a promotional video for Gateway Media based in Whitechapel. Sir Ian, famed for roles as Magneto in X Men and Gandalf in Lord of the rings, was pleased to put his voice to good use. “He was a real star, his support has meant we can reach a wider audience and continue our growth as a new media social enterprise” said Gateway Media’s manager Simon Baker.

City Gateway, a Tower Hamlets charity working with disengaged and low-skilled young people which celebrated it’s 10th Anniversary earlier this month, has this week launched the first of a range of new partnerships aimed at having an even bigger impact on the area in the next 10 years.

The charity’s work has already seen NEET (not in education, employment or training) young people figures for the Borough fall from a shocking 15% down to 6.7%. By working closely with City firms the charity aims to bring their skills and resources to bare on the local community.

Last night Tower Hamlets charity City Gateway marked 10 years of working to bring hope to Tower Hamlets by partnering with City Firms through an event hosted by the Canary Wharf Group, please find attached the original event's press release.

An exciting and innovative new catering enterprise called Flavour Gateway is being launched on Tuesday 10 March at the annual showcase event for local charity, City Gateway.  Targeting organisations across East London with their high quality and professional catering service, Flavour Gateway’s menus will be reflecting the multi-cultural tastes of the area with dishes ranging from South Asian specialities to traditional British cuisine.

Youth workers on City Gateway’s (www.citygateway.org.uk) training courses, aimed at disengaged young people in Tower Hamlets, estimate that more than 70% of their trainees smoke, well above the 30% national average. The charity is partnering up with stop-smoking charity Quit (www.quit.org.uk) to tackle the problem in a way that promotes all round health for the young people involved.

On the evening of March 10th at the East Wintergarden, Canary Wharf, local charity City Gateway will host its annual showcase, this year being extra special as it marks a decade of work with disengaged young people and women in the borough of Tower Hamlets.
