SPURS and England defender Michael Dawson took time out from stopping the world’s finest strikers to drop into an East End charity. The former Forest trainee visited City Gateway in Limehouse to discover how it supports youth sports initiatives in Tower Hamlets.

Through the Team England Footballers Charity, the England players donate their match fee to fund the development of City Gateway’s futsal league, a key activity for connecting disadvantaged young people.

Between 2006 and 2008, the number of young people not in education, employment or training (known as NEET) in Tower Hamlets fell from 10.9 per cent to 6.7 per cent, refleclting the successful measures of the council and its partners in the business, voluntary and community sectors.

Around a quarter of young people will go through periods of being out of work, education or training between the ages of 16 and 18.

We are very excited to be moving into a new centre at Heron Quays today, thanks to our partners the Canary Wharf Group. The space will house our main offices, our social enterprise hub and some of our apprenticeship training. It’ll be a great professional environment for young people to be working & learning in.

Safia Altaf won the “Skills for Life Award” at the Skills for London Awards, presented by Lee McQueen at Madame Tussauds last night.

Before coming to City Gateway Safia Altaf lacked self-confidence and was struggling to find work. She had tried to find employment but couldn’t do so.

Representatives from more than 10 major firms (including The Economist, Allen & Overy, Denton Wilde Sapte and Societe Generale) came down to the City Gateway Women’s Project today to mark the launch of a new ‘100 Women’ partnership initiative. The scheme encourages to get involved in the community in Tower Hamlets, whilst capturing the stories of 100 women whose lives are changed by it in time for the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day next March.
