This Month: ... Showcase 4th December ... Enterprise Website ... Nigel Dean ... Ocean iMedia ... Vickie Jacks ...

Welcome to the first edition of City Gateway E-news! To celebrate this landmark issue we have a bumper basketful of delights to beset your senses and give you that warm fuzzy feeling and happy dreams.

We have a preview of our new Enterprise website, updates on our Engage and Export training courses, and exciting news on a pioneering new project tackling gun and knife crime. And of course, much much more..!

City Gateway Showcase
Monday 4th December sees the advent of the City Gateway Showcase, generously hosted by ABN AMRO at their Bishopsgate offices! Showcase sounds much less boring than AGM, and indeed it will be! There will be short presentations on every aspect of our work at City Gateway: stories from local young people, all the latest from our Social Enterprise Hub and chances to meet our staff, apprentices, trainees and partners... and, most importantly, buffet and drinks!

If you would like to come then please email Linda at showcase@citygateway.org.uk so she can put you on her list. Because if your name's not down you're not coming in!

It promises to be a great evening and it would be wonderful to have as many of you there as possible to help us celebrate the success and achievement of our trainees. So pop it in your diary and we'll see you there!

Who we are...
Initiated in 1999, City Gateway is a Tower Hamlets-based charity which aims to alleviate poverty, unemployment and social and economic exclusion, helping individuals to develop their potential and realise their ambitions by providing training and progression programmes.

This e-Newsletter is being sent to you because either you or your company directly supports the work we do, whether you know it or not, and we want to acknowledge and thank you for your hard work and in the process let you know what we are getting up to.

Apprentice of the Month
Vickie Jacks
Vickie came to City Gateway as a trainee, twice, and even though she talked through most of the sessions, she passed all her exams, and has come back to us for a third spell. This time however she is an apprentice, helping as a teaching support on the Engage course.

Senior Manager Dave says "Vickie has been a tremendous asset to the engage course. She has a real ability to engage with trainees on their level, and her dulcet tones can often be heard asking the trainees to focus!!!"

Vickie is described as being caring, thoughtful and lippy.

Latest News
Export / Engage Updates
We run two headline training courses: Engage and, following that, Export, both of which are currently oversubscribed. On these courses trainees can gain accredited qualifications in IT, multimedia and sport, equipping them to flee the nest and find gainful employment.

The latest Engage course has just successfully finished, with a record 92% of trainees passing their IT exams!

Export has run 3 courses during 2006 with over 60 young people gaining qualifications, and over a quarter going on to higher education. Many others have found careers in nursing, childcare, law, banking and management consultancy, or even working as City Gateway apprentices.

Ocean iMedia
City Gateway is excited to announce the start of the Ocean iMedia course, a radical new project in tackling gun and knife crime. The multimedia Bus will run 12 sessions working with hard-to-reach young people to produce a DVD facing the issues of gun and knife crime, which will be shown to London MPs.

Ocean iMedia will act as a catalyst for discussions addressing problems of social exclusion and violent crime which plague Tower Hamlets.

People
Meet the Staff - #1 Nigel Dean
Dean by name and Dean by nature, Nigel is a City Gateway legend. Nigel started work at CG 3 years ago and in a blur went from being a volunteer, to part-time media tutor and now to Hub Progression Coordinator.

Nigel works one on one with every trainee, assessing, encouraging and solving problems like Poirot in his red cardigan. Some feel that he is stalking them: he follows them, phones them, writes down what they say, and keeps files on them, but it’s all done in a caring way.

Everyone loves Nigel. You should too. If you appreciate
Nigel, then email him and tell him: Nigel@citygateway.org.uk

Byebye Sophie... Hello Bex!
It is with a teary eye that we announce the departure of Sophie Grimble for the wilds of York – she has a new direction, as an actress in the Riding Lights Theatre Company, playing Babushka in their Christmas Show.

But for every dark night there's a bright new dawn and Sophie has handed her fundraising baton to Bex. Bex is now your point of contact at City Gateway for partnership opportunities and volunteering. ‘The strategic fundraiser is dead, long live the strategic fundraiser!’
