City Gateway e-News

This Month: ... Eddie-torial... Course News... Re:live... What is Social Enterprise..? Vision Day...

Eddie Stride -DirectorWelcome to the first enews Eddie-torial!

"Well, it has been a fantastic month for City Gateway: We're really excited to have been successful on our LDA Opportunites Fund bid so we can signifcantly develop the women's project we run at Lansbury Lodge, two of our young apprentices will be starting permanent roles with CG from April following 6 month placements, and we've finalised our vision for the coming year!

"This e-newsletter outlines our exciting projects and the success we are having, especially in engaging young people, helping them achieve and develop. It's been particularly encouraging to hear that 2 former trainees - Ashraf and Shirajal - have started employment with IT firms in the city - well done guys!
"

Who we are...
Initiated in 1999, City Gateway is a Tower Hamlets-based charity which aims to alleviate poverty, unemployment and social and economic exclusion, helping individuals to develop their potential and realise their ambitions by providing training and progression programmes.

This e-Newsletter is being sent to you because either you or your company directly supports the work we do, whether you know it or not, and we want to acknowledge and thank you for your hard work and in the process let you know what we are getting up to.

City Gateway Vision Day

We are very excited about the 4th May, for on that day ABN-AMRO are hosting a vision day for City Gateway!

In the afternoon there will be lunch and an opportunity for all of our existing and potential corporate supporters to find out more about City Gateway. It's a great chance to hear more about us, but more importantly an opportunity to meet us and our other corporate supporters, pool ideas and be inspired!

If you would like to come to the Vision Day then please RSVP to let us know by emailing Jerry@citygateway.org.uk

Course News
Engage
Following on from the the last successful Engage course, with a pass rate of 87% in level 1 IT exams, the latest course has just begun with 10 trainees settled in and working towards their IT exam next week. All being well in the next couple of weeks, there will be more good news with even more passes under our belt!

Engage-Plus

After the fantastic Engage pass rate most trainees have progressed onto Engage-Plus and are working towards their level 1 in IT, Multimedia and Personal Development.

Many trainees commented that passing their IT on Engage meant for the first time they had achieved something positive after leaving school with no qualifications! This is great news! Watch this space!

Export
There are currently 32 trainees on our
Pre-Export
course studying hard for NVQ qualifications in sport, IT and multimedia.

Indeed Razia who is on Pre-Export recently said "I'm really enjoying being here. The things I'm learning on the Job Life sessions are changing me. They are really helping me with communication... I've become more confident and everyone has helped me to come out of myself."

We're currently gearing up for the next Export course which will start on the 16th April. We can't wait...

Apprentice of the Month

Fili

Like Oliver Twist, Fili keeps coming back and asking for more! But unlike the Master, we are more than happy to give him more! Fili first came to City Gateway on the Engage course, came back and completed the Export course and then came back again and completed a 2 week fitness instructor course and was offered a place with GLL.

And now, following in the footsteps of Take That, Fili is back once again (maybe back for good?), working as a Tutor Assistant with Joe Toko for Gateway Motion, helping run sport training sessions. Given 3 words, Joe describes him as calm, cool and collected, and we can't disagree with that!

Enterprise
What is Social Enterprise all about?
People are always asking us "we know that you do social enterprise at City Gateway, but what does that actually mean?"

So to help you all we have added a new page to the Enterprise website, which tells you all about what social enterprise actually is and how it works for us, our trainees, the local community and how it can work for you too!

It's really very exciting, so if you want to know what Social Enterprise is all about then click here...

Creative Me-news
Charlotte and all the Creative Me-ers have been very busy this month, running the Creative Me and Sew Creative courses. They also set up a Creative Me stall on the 8th March to celebrate International Women's Day.

We also have some sad news in that the Spitalfields Creative Me stall is taking a break for a few months, but hopefully it will be back soon!

Sponsor Phil!

Time and muscles are getting tight for our very own Phil Williams who is running the London Marathon in a few weeks time. He is aiming for a time of under 4 hours and also aiming to raise £5000 for City Gateway. While both targets are ambitious we fully support Phil and believe he can do it!

Unless you want to get up early to train with him, the best way to support Phil and make him run faster is to sponsor him online here! So please be generous and Sponsor Phil - and help us to bring hope and regeneration to Tower Hamlets in the process...

Meet The Staff
No. 5 - Sam Leak

Sam Leak, also known as 'the mule' is a real City Gateway success story. From trainee, to volunteer, to trainee apprentice to full staff apprentice to fully employed Junior Designer... someday soon he'll be running the show!

Sam is our digital video editor supremo and has just started up a new Social Enterprise venture called Re:live (see above). Sam's hobbies include playing the drums and dislocating his shoulder among other things. Like all of our staff, Sam is great and we love him. If you like email him Sam@citygateway.org.uk.
