City Gateway e-News

This Month: ... Bumper New Staff Edition ... Valentines Gifts ... Course News ... Office Chairs Needed ...

Welcome to the first edition of City Gateway e-News in 2007! In this Bumper New Staff Edition we will introduce you to the new friendly faces around City Gateway, as well as some exciting news of our Engage and Export training courses.

Christmas was a wonderful time of giving and receiving and everyone at City Gateway has come back refreshed after a well-earned break after a most amazing and successful 2006. And because we were so good last year we got some great presents for Christmas in the shape of 4 new staff members! It may be cold outside, but here at City Gateway it’s all warm and snugly...

Who we are...
Initiated in 1999, City Gateway is a Tower Hamlets-based charity which aims to alleviate poverty, unemployment and social and economic exclusion, helping individuals to develop their potential and realise their ambitions by providing training and progression programmes.

This e-Newsletter is being sent to you because either you or your company directly supports the work we do, whether you know it or not, and we want to acknowledge and thank you for your hard work and in the process let you know what we are getting up to.

Course News
Engage PLUS!!!
Here at City Gateway are really excited to be able to announce a brand new training course! Ladies and gentlemen we proudly present Engage Plus!

Engage Plus will be headed up by the able and ever-ready Joe Lowther, and will prepare our trainees with Level 1 Qualifications and more life skills before they begin the new and improved Export. The new course will start very soon so watch this space for news...
Engage
The first new Engage course of 2007 is already well under way with 20 young people from Tower Hamlets 'engaged' in training for ICT, sports, multimedia and lifeskills qualifications.

Export
The last Export course was tremendously successful and 4 trainees; Aaron, Ben, Jake and Fili have been offered sessional jobs with GLL after their Export placements! Good work!

Also, Sabina and Janna have interviews for Child Care placements this week! We wish them all the best.

The next Export course will be starting soon, so expect to be hearing more success stories soon!!

Apprentice of the Month
Rukeya Begum
Rukeya is quite small, but don't be fooled! She is like the Tardis and there is an amazing amount of talent and ability concentrated inside... Rukeya first came to City Gateway as a trainee on the Export course, then decided she didn't want to leave, and has now joined Bex in the business team as an apprentice Fundraiser.

Rukeya's ambition is to work as a fundraiser for a charity. Well, she's certainly in the right place!

Valentines Day
Love Creativity!
Valentines Day is fast approaching and love is in the air! While you could spend money on expensive gifts, you could get them something extra-special! Why not try Creative Me, our art & craft and floristry social enterprise!

The Creative Me market stall (Spitalfields Market, Thurs-Fri) will be selling special hand-made Valentines Cards and is offering the chance to make personalised badges and compact mirrors. Creative Me Floristry is delighted to announce a unique Bouquet Offer to give you the perfect flowers for that special someone. Prices start from £20, orders placed by Friday 9th February.

Bumper Meet The Staff Edition!
Lisa charlton
Contrary to what you would expect, Lisa is not from Charlton. In fact she has never been there. However Lisa has been to Newham where she used to work for the Youth Offending Team, and also to Kenya where she led a team working with street children.

Lisa loves singing and we at City Gateway love Lisa. Being an abstract noun, singing can't really love us, otherwise it would all be perfect. If you think Lisa is great, then email her at Lisa@citygateway.org.uk.

Peter Aleksin
Peter has joined City Gateway and has joined the training course team as an Export progression worker. As his name suggests Peter is a keen outdoorsman and likes nothing better than a trip to the Lake District. It is perhaps unsurprising then that his favourite book is 'Three Men In A Boat', although they were surely on a river.

Peter is wise and has size 9 feet. We love Peter and think he's great! If you think so too then email him at peter@citygateway.org.uk

James Fawcett
Following the trend of employing men over 6 foot tall, James certainly doesn’t disappoint, although a significant proportion of his height is made up of curly hair – a convincing optical illusion.

James used to be a Youth Worker in Norwich and in his own words is 'an organised and strategic thinker'. We'll see! He is coming on board as an outreach and progression worker, out on the 'cold front' of City Gateway. James is great too: email him on james.fawcett@citygateway.org.uk

Matt Swap
In an amazing twist of fate we have lost one computer programming Matt who has left to go to Cambridge and just to avoid confusion replaced him with an almost identical computer programming Matt who comes from Cambridge! Remarkable! So, there's a new Matt in charge of all things IT at City Gateway... it’s out with the Lee, in with the Davison!

If you have any spare monitors, keyboards or mice, or are interested in our secure computer disposal service, then email Matt it@citygateway.org.uk . Long live IT!

Chair Request!
Although Christmas has passed, if you would like to give City Gateway a late present it is never too late! We currently have some office chair shaped holes (in our office) and would dearly love it if someone out there has some spare office chairs that they would like to donate.

Remember that to give is better than to receive! Contact Bex on bex@citygateway.org.uk if you want to be the best!
