City Gateway e-News

This Month: ... Women's Project Launch Event ... Limehouse Centre Update... Moving Gateway Media ... Babies!

Welcome to the City Gateway February Eddie-itorial!
Eddie Stride -DirectorChristmas provided a much needed break for our team and it's been great to see them re-energised and with fresh enthusiasm as we've kicked the year off with a bang. Our main training programs are running nearly at full capacity with 5 courses underway across the full range of IT, media & sports options we currently provide and over at Lansbury Lodge 9 women have just completed an important food hygiene qualification.

A new year always brings new challenges as well as new possibilities and it's going to be difficult to say goodbye to Dave Pilkington who has worked tirelessly for City Gateway over the past 3 years but it's exciting to see new staff joining the team with fresh ideas and inspirations for the year ahead! As we build on our traditional training work I have no doubt that 2008 will see us expanding our provision and meeting the community's needs more comprehensively than we ever have before.

Who we are...
Initiated in 1999, City Gateway is a Tower Hamlets-based charity which aims to alleviate poverty, unemployment and social and economic exclusion, helping individuals to develop their potential and realise their ambitions by providing training and progression programmes.

This e-Newsletter is being sent to you because either you or your company directly supports the work we do, whether you know it or not, and we want to acknowledge and thank you for your hard work and in the process let you know what we are getting up to.

New Review, New Video, New Showcase!

It's been an exciting month here in the Gateway Media office as we've been working on shiny new versions of our annual review and video which we'll use to advertise and promote awareness of our work over the coming year. Both are sorely in need of an update as our delivery has expanded so much over the past year and it's been great to be able to incorporate trainees and apprentices in the production of both again.

Looking ahead to March we'll be hosting our annual showcase event which brings together all our partners and supporters, as well as many of the people who have taken our courses, in a celebration of all that we, and they, have achieved over the past year. If you want to receive a copy of our new review, DVD and an invite to the next showcase then drop Jerry an e-mail with all your details.

It's Limehouse Gym, But Not As We Know It

January saw the Gateway Motion at the Limehouse Community Centre open it's doors to the public for the first time. The fully equipped facility (with state of the art equipment, sound system and even a Wii!) is aimed at giving young people an affordable alternative to the other commercial gyms in the area and to help them lead as healthy a life as possible.

The gym currently runs a variety of evening sessions for young people and will be expanding to offer a wider range of services, including fitness coach training and a tailored first aid course.

Linking-up Limehouse

When asked what he wanted (or perhaps deserved) to remember his time here at City Gateway, Dave Pilkington suggested a lifetime achievement award might be in order. Well, he's only been here a little over 3 years but his time as deputy chief executive has certainly seen him have a big impact on the organisation and as he leaves us to start a new life in South Africa we're all going to be sad to see him go. Dave has brought with him a relaxed excitement and a positive attitude which is so infectious you can see staff get more enthusiastic the minute he walks in the room (surely they can't all be sucking up?). Anyway, though we wish him and his family well it'll definitely be sad to see him leave - the award is thus well deserved! A special mention goes out to James Fawcett who came a close second in the nominations for his work in setting up Limehouse Youth Club.

New Office, New Website

A couple of months ago we told you about Gateway Media's exciting new home in the real world and today I'm delighted to tell you we've moved into new premises in cyberspace too.

Have a look over at gateway-media.co.uk and see for yourself our funky little red home. It's not quite finished yet but perhaps the samples there will inspire you to have us make your next video for you, or perhaps to get us updating tour website, flyers or complete corporate look? Gateway Media has experience in all these, and more, and is a great way of supporting City Gateway's work and helping us show our trainees how a real media company runs.

Course News
Engage & Export

City Gateway is now running almost at capacity with an Engage course in full throttle and another Engage:Sport course just kicking off. Export has now launched with 3 separate full cohorts - ExportAmongst other things our Sport stream is training Young people to Level 2 in sports-fitness, our Multimedia course is offering young people 21 days of work experience in a media firm and our IT stream is packed out with 16 students eager to understand business IT. To give you some idea of the impact our work is having here are two quotes we've collected from the trainees:

"I thought it was going to be rubbish, but it was actually really good." (Peter Bryant, 18, Speaking about IT Export course)

"I can't wait to start the course. I've been looking forward to it for ages." (Shaal Karim, 19, Eagerly awaiting the start of Media Export)

Lansbury Lodge Womens' Project News
Lansbury Lodge 1

It's been an exciting month over at Lansbury Lodge with the start of new staff member Beth Johnston who's come down from Leeds to start managing the project, her theatrical experience is bound to bring a new twist to the project.

We'll be offering fun workouts for kids, women's fitness advice, dental checks, advice on stopping smoking, one-to-one sessions with employment advisers and lots more! There'll even be free healthy food and sessions on how to cook and eat well, and you can sign up for our courses and community activities. New Staff Members of the Month!
Beth, Ping & Darren

It's been a sad month here at City Gateway as we've had to say goodbye to Dave & James but we're delighted to welcome three new members onto the staff team! Darren will be trying to fill some of the gap Dave's leaving as he takes on the role of 'Chief Operations Officer', Beth will be looking to develop our women's project and take it to the next level and Ping will be filling the shoes our receptionist Linda once had as she takes over front desk responsibilities and countless other important tasks that go completely unnoticed until someone forgets to do them (like the stationery order!)
