City Gateway e-News

This Month: ... Sponsor Phil... Sew Creative... Engage Lisa... What is Social Enterprise..?

Welcome to February's edition of the City Gateway e-News! Although February, thanks to Julius Caesar, is much shorter than all the other months we at City Gateway have crammed just the same amount of effort and love into it as for all the other months.

Valentines Day is a great reminder to us all about cherishing and caring for the people we love, and at City Gateway we have big love for everyone who we work with, which has meant we have been very busy this month. We have news from our training courses, exciting trainee updates, and news on how to Sponsor Phil for the Flora London Marathon 2007!

Who we are...
Initiated in 1999, City Gateway is a Tower Hamlets-based charity which aims to alleviate poverty, unemployment and social and economic exclusion, helping individuals to develop their potential and realise their ambitions by providing training and progression programmes.

This e-Newsletter is being sent to you because either you or your company directly supports the work we do, whether you know it or not, and we want to acknowledge and thank you for your hard work and in the process let you know what we are getting up to.

Course News
Pre-Export
Our new training course, Pre-Export, which provides a value-added stepping stone between our Engage and Export courses is in week 2 of 6, with 32 trainees taking more specialised qualifications in sport, multimedia and IT.
Lisa Is Engage-d
Fresh from only being introduced in last month's e-news, Lisa (I've-never-been-to) Charlton has taken over from James in heading up the Engage course.

In the final week of the current Engage course 19 of our trainees have passed their IT exams, so many congratulations to them! Good show!

Apprentice of the Month
Minkles
Minkles is a young man of many mysteries, like what is his real name and how many hats does he own? Probably the biggest mystery is how does he manage to produce so much new music? It's a bit like the film Alien - one minute he is just sitting there, the next a whole new tune has erupted from inside him and has scurried away...

Minkles completed the Export course and now works in the outreach team, running music workshops on our multimedia Bus. Cut him and he bleeds music - not that this should be tested - it's a metaphor.

Sew Creative
New Creative Me Course!
Creative Me is really pleased to announce the start of a brand new course - "Sew Creative". So (sew) if you want to learn new skills and are interested in fashion and textiles then this could be for you...

The course runs every Tuesday from 27th February to 3rd April, from 1-3pm in Lansbury Lodge Community Centre, Ricardo Street, E14. Click here for more information.

Sponsor Phil!
Phil Williams is running the London Marathon in a few months time, not just to prove to us how much of a man he is, but also to raise money for City Gateway. Phil aims to put himself through immense pain to raise £5000 to fund 10 places on our new apprenticeship scheme. What a man!

If you would like to sponsor Phil for the London Marathon then click here and find out how you too can help City Gateway bring hope and regeneration to Tower Hamlets. Phil will love you forever... we will too!

Meet The Staff
No. 4 - Linda-Joy Warwick

Linda is City Gateway's very own Captain Mainwaring - the first line of home defence! Linda single-handedly guards the front desk at our main offices, answering phones, faxes, letters and emails, and organising the office all whilst doing the seemingly impossible: organising Eddie's diary... She who dares, wins!

Linda is originally from New Zealand, and would love to return there one day, but until that point in time we would love her to keep on soldiering away here at City Gateway, holding the fort! We truly appreciate all of Linda's work, and if you do too, then let her know - Linda@citygateway.org.uk.

Spread the E-news!

We love the City Gateway E-news (well we do write it), and from the emails you send back it seems that you do too! Indeed, following the success of the e-news in spreading joy each month, telling you all about what we have been up to, many people have been interested in following suit.

So, if you would like us to produce an e-news letter for you or your company, then feel free to get in touch and we'll see what we can do. We can make e-news letters in a wide variety of styles and levels of seriousness(!) to suit you and your news. Interested? Well then email Bex bex@citygateway.org.uk
