The Bus
The Bus is our Double Decker multimedia centre and music studio. In the past we have used this versatile space to provide regular appearances around the Estates to take part in detached youth work and outreach, while keeping young people entertained with music production and sports activities when they may have otherwise been involved in crime.
Below is just one example of how The Bus has been used to change young peoples lives in Tower Hamlets. If you are interested in The Bus please contact the bus@citygateway.org.uk.
Case Study - The Bus
The Brief:
The Oxford House Youth Service needed to arrange the provision of training for a group of young people on the Cleveland Estate in Tower Hamlets. The group had recently established themselves as The Cleveland Youth Alliance, and their main priority was to offer support and guidance to the residents on their estate.
The training had to bring the young people up to a standard in which they could create and maintain their own website to cover local events and publicise the community work they were involved in. The course also had to be accredited to ensure that it would improve their job prospects.
The Problem:
The youth involved in the scheme were not willing to venture out of the Cleveland Estate for fear of gang violence due to the territorial nature of the groups of youths in the neighbourhood, therefore the training would have to come to them. Also due to the nature of the young people involved the trainers delivering the course had to be experienced in dealing with hard to reach young people.
The Solution:
The Bus in partnership with the Gateway Media was the perfect solution. It ensure that the training venue was on site, which also created a novelty aspect to the training, and Gateway Medias trainers are used to dealing with the type of young people who so knew how to offer the correct support during and after the course.
The Outcome:
A 12 week iMedia level 1 accredited course delivered by Gateway Media was completed on The Bus. The course was comprised of photography, animation, graphic design and web design units and led to the young setting up their own successful website.
